The Franklin County Cattlemen's Board created a Junior Cattlemen's Association (FCJC) several years ago. The FCJC have around 40 members and meet almost once a month for an educational and/or recreational event. The KCA began a Junior Cattlemen Cattle Working Contest in 2023. The Franklin County advisor invited members to form a team and compete in 2024. 10 members were interested and started preparing for competition.

Every member became BQCA Chute-side certified. They had hands on training in all aspects of BQCA: reading drug labels, drawing up vaccines, injections, ear tagging, implants, notching etc. A local processor donated ears for 'real life' practice. Next the two teams practiced at the KSU Research Farm with their herd then spent several evenings working cattle on three cooperators farm processing over 200 head.

Eight members stayed with the program so we were able to enter two teams. Twelve adults assisted with the education and training. Their experience will entice other members to join and compete.

Both teams competed in the 2024 qualifiers and one team made it to the state competition in May of 2025. Here they placed 7th. All were very proud of how well they did. These young people are now confident that they can handle and work cattle correctly and safely. A side benefit was that the cooperators that allowed them to work their cattle and learned new BQCA techniques and procedures from the students.
