Empowering Homeschoolers: A College Preparation Success Story from Taylor County

Author: Kimberly Thomas

Planning Unit: Taylor County CES

Major Program: Child Development General

Plan of Work: Youth and Adults Overcome Life Situations by Acquiring Life Skills

Outcome: Initial Outcome

Kimberly Thomas, the Family and Consumer Science Agent, led a seven-session College Preparation Class at the Campbellsville Homeschool Co-op, equipping six, homeschool students with essential skills for college success. In Taylor County, where 4.5% of youth are homeschooled (Legislative Research Commission, 2018), this class provided a vital resource for college readiness.

Students explored various colleges, both in-state and out-of-state, and learned effective strategies for standardized tests like the ACT and SAT. They understood application requirements and discovered early college programs for earning credits through a local college’s dual credit program.

One of the most requested topics from the students was how to navigate financial aid. The class covered different types of financial aid, including grants, scholarships, and loans. Students received resources for scholarship applications and were encouraged to develop a savings plan for college. Preparation for college life included understanding academic, social, and cultural aspects. Students were encouraged to visit campuses and connect with college resources like academic advisors and career services.

The Campbellsville Homeschool Co-op College Preparation Class was a success, leaving six students well-prepared for college challenges, application processes, extracurricular engagement, financial aid, and smooth transitions into college life. The class made a lasting impact, setting students on a path to higher education success.
