Friends Forever Make Friends with Community Leaders

Author: Rebecca Woodall

Planning Unit: Crittenden County CES

Major Program: Community Vitality and Leadership -FCS

Plan of Work: Empowering Community Leaders

Outcome: Initial Outcome

The Leaders of our Community have had to deal with a lot between local water crisis, storm damage and other issues.   Friends Forever, our club for adults with Developmental Disabilities, often feel isolated and left out of community leadership roles, they have also specifically asked if they could do things for the community.

Members of Friendship Forever wrote encouraging notes to community members and elected officials in the community. The friends worked diligently until they had written letters to all of the elected officials and some other community leaders.  They put so much thought into letters making sure that each community leader felt special.    Their kindness was returned two fold when letters, emails and gifts came pouring in to the Friends Forever.  They were especially excited to have a visitor from the Mayor during their next meeting.  She spoke with them about their kindness and how she had felt very discouraged and the letter made day and lifted her spirits.

Seven community members said they felt appreciated by receiving the letters.   One Hundred percent of the Friends Forever said writing the letters and getting the feedback made them feel that they were making a difference in their community
