This spring, a unique two-part gardening series at the Senior Citizens Center blossomed into something truly special—offering not just skills and smiles, but meaningful moments of connection for older adults in the community.
The series began with a flavorful twist. In the first session, the Family and Consumer Sciences agent led a fun, hands-on lesson in making homemade salsa, while the Agriculture agent introduced participants to the concept of a “salsa garden”—a homegrown mix of tomatoes, peppers, onions, and herbs. Participants learned how to grow the ingredients needed for their recipe, blending culinary skills with gardening know-how.
After the food-filled fun, creativity took center stage. Each participant painted their own terracotta pot, adding personal flair and a splash of color. These custom pots became the centerpiece of the second session, where seniors returned to transplant flowers and herbs into the very pots they had decorated. With guidance from the agents and a team of volunteers, participants got to take home—or back to their rooms at the center—a little piece of the garden they had helped create.
In a county where 15.3% of the population is aged 65 or older, programs like this are more than recreational—they’re essential. Gardening has been shown to improve mood, reduce stress, and foster social connections, all of which are critical for aging well.
