Empowering Fulton County Agriculture: The Success of CAIP 2024

Author: Benjamin Rudy

Planning Unit: Fulton County CES

Major Program: Farm Management, Economics and Policy

Plan of Work: To improve the stability, resiliency, and financial well being of individuals and families.

Outcome: Initial Outcome

The 2024 cycle of the County Agricultural Incentives Program (CAIP) in Fulton County has been a remarkable success, showcasing the dedication and innovation of our local producers. This year, we saw a total of 13 producers apply for the program, with 12 being approved.

Funding and Financials

  1. Total funds awarded from the state: $60,000
  2. Total producer funds to date: $57,089.83
  3. Maximum producer amount: $5,000
  4. Unused funds (as of 8/5/24): $83.98
  5. Potential investment from state funds and producers: Over $110,000

Investment Areas

The program has successfully funded various critical areas of agricultural development in Fulton County:

  1. Farm Infrastructure: 7 projects
  2. AgTech and Leadership Development: 4 projects
  3. Small Animal: 2 projects
  4. Fencing and On-Farm Water: 1 project
  5. Value-Added Marketing: 1 project

These investments have not only enhanced the operational capabilities of our producers but also fostered growth and sustainability in our agricultural community. The focus on diverse areas such as AgTech, leadership development, and value-added marketing highlights our commitment to modernizing agriculture and supporting innovative practices.

Extension Office Efforts

The success of CAIP also means significant work for the Fulton County Extension Office. The Fulton County Agriculture and Natural Resources Agent has been ensuring all returned paperwork meets funding criteria, answering numerous questions about approved practices, and processing final receipts for payment. Each participant is required to attend an educational experience sponsored by the Extension Service, further enhancing their knowledge and skills.

Impact and Future Prospects

At the end of the day, the total investment in agriculture in Fulton County will exceed $100,000, with many projects being of a long-term nature that will spread benefits over years to come. The success of the 2024 CAIP cycle is a testament to the hard work and vision of our producers. By leveraging state funds and their own investments, they have made significant strides in improving their operations and contributing to the local economy. As we look forward to future cycles, we remain committed to supporting our agricultural community and driving continued growth and success.
