Succession Planning Series

Author: Chelsey Anderson

Planning Unit: Cumberland County CES

Major Program: Farm Management, Economics and Policy

Plan of Work: Livestock & Crops

Outcome: Initial Outcome

The Cumberland County Women in Agriculture group gathers once every other month to have educational sessions as well as network. From those meetings, a need arose around the succession/estate planning subject matter. The Cumberland County ANR agent along with the Cumberland County FCS agent partnered together to offer a four-part, succession planning series that started in September 2024 and wrapped up in February 2025. In total, 33 participants participated in the series. Of those, eight attended all four sessions and 15 attended at least three sessions. Participants took part in sessions that covered a general overview of succession planning, wills, probate, trusts, digital estates, and the farmland succession initiative. Participants heard from local attorneys, a UK Agricultural Economics specialist, a UK FCS agent, and the Kentucky Farm Bureau Farmland Succession Initiative program leader. At the first session, the question was presented to participants, why are you here? Participants stated they were interested in what happens if we (a married couple) pass at the same time, who gets what; seeking basic information; and one participant had multiple families on one estate. According to an evaluation that was given at the last session, 100% (20 out of 20) indicated they understand how to manage/address current estate planning issues facing my family, farming operation, or business and can identify estate planning strategies for my family, farming operation, or business. This is an increase from 70% and 85%, respectively, from prior to the series. 95% of completed evaluations indicated they plan to create at least one specific estate planning related goal for their family, farming operation, or business and they plan to take an action toward implementing at least one estate planning strategy in regard to the subject area presented. 100% indicated they plan to implement at least one strategy in regard to estate planning. A couple quotes from the evaluations, the series “Makes the thought of planning easier.” “The series has kept me motivated to do the things I know I need to get done. The speaker from KFB has broken down the process into manageable steps.”
