Major Program: Increasing Access to Quality Arts Experiences
Plan of Work: Community Arts
Outcome: Long-Term Outcome
One of Greenup County's most valuable resources is our people who are willing to use and share their talents for the good of the community. Blaine Roberts has grown up as an active member of Greenup Arts. Blaine was one of the first student actors to be part of the Jesse Stuart music/drama programming when the first agent, Cora Hughes, was hired for the Fine Arts Program in Greenup County in 2008. Blaine has continued to participate with Greenup Arts and use his talents in the fine arts field throughout his high school and college education. He also credits 4-H Communication Day events for giving him the necessary experience to excel as a public speaker.
In May 2018 as a recent college graduate with a degree in Theatre, Blaine returned to his hometown as a Playwright and Director for Greenup Arts. The royalty-free script for the show, Moby Chick was used to produce a full production music/drama using as cast of 35 students from all three school systems in Greenup County plus community adult volunteers. The show was produced through a series of 25 rehearsals using the Missoula Children's Theater method of teaching which Blaine has studied as a member of that program. The show was presented with five performances for three student audiences and twice for the community with a total of 700 in attendance. A cast party to recognize all participants and parents after the last show was sponsored by the Greenup Extension Arts Council.
Blaine will attend the University of Georgia as a Law student in the fall of this year. He says that his time with Extension programming helped prepare him for his successful honors program college experience and that he has a heart for living in a small community and giving back as a professional because of what he learned from Extension. All student cast members and parents reported that they wish to continue in Greenup Arts programming. Students reported that they feel prepared to audition for more plays and music drama productions and have higher self confidence as a result of being part of Moby Chick.
