Greenup County Extension volunteers have requested that Greenup Extension Arts Council provide educational opportunities for community members in the area of heritage arts and music. During the program year of 2017-18, Greenup Arts volunteers have organized and led classes in the areas of fiber arts (crochet and knitting), mini clay sculpture, flower arranging, photography, and music that have reached over 100 participants.
All instructors have shared principles and elements of the focus topic that are necessary for students to understand in order to achieve advanced skills. Partners included the Greenup and Boyd County Libraries and the Plaza Community Nazarene Church.
Janis Campbell, instructor, said, “I love the opportunity to share my love for art with other people with similar interest. Using our hands to make art is directly connected with our hearts. Sharing this activity connects us on a spiritual level.”
A flower arranging student said, “I didn’t realize how much went into putting flowers together to make them look good.” Another student reported that her favorite part of the class was the hands-on work and one-on-one training.
100% of participants in all classes reported via survey an increased knowledge and understanding on the class topic. It was also reported that participants felt positive that they would use these skills at home in the future.
