Bonnie Sigmon Farmers Feast: Addressing the Need for Agricultural Investment in Youth

Laurel County faced a pressing challenge: insufficient funding for programs aimed at promoting agricultural practices among the youth. Specifically, local FFA (Future Farmers of America) chapters at North and South Laurel High Schools lacked the necessary resources to enhance their efforts in preparing the next generation of agricultural leaders.

Partners and Collaboration
 Recognizing the importance of investing in youth agricultural education, the Laurel County Extension Office partnered with the London-Laurel Farmers Market, North and South Laurel High Schools’ FFA programs, and several community organizations. The effort was further supported by the Laurel County Cattlemen's Association, local vendors, and dedicated community members who came together to address this funding gap.

Educational Response
 The Extension Office and the London-Laurel County Farmers Market collaborated to host the Bonnie Sigmon Farmers Feast, an event designed to raise funds for the FFA programs while also promoting awareness about the importance of agricultural education.

Horticulture Agent Steve Mobley, Agriculture Agent Glenn Williams, FCS Agent Lora Davidson, 4-H Agent Elizabeth Easley, and other Laurel County Extension staff worked closely with the North and South Laurel Agriculture teachers, and the London-Laurel County Farmers Market to organize the event. The Laurel County Cattlemen's Association prepared a "trash can dinner" using ingredients provided by Farmers Market vendors, creating a unique and engaging dining experience for attendees.

Tickets were sold for the dinner, and the proceeds—totaling over $7,000—were evenly distributed between the North and South Laurel High School FFA programs. Additionally, community members donated cakes that were auctioned during the event, generating additional funds to support the schools.

Participants and Target Audience
 The event attracted over 200 guests, including FFA members, community supporters, and the general public. Attendees gained valuable insights into the work of the FFA, as agriculture teachers and students shared firsthand accounts of their efforts to ensure a strong future for agriculture in Laurel County.

Outcome and Impact
 The Bonnie Sigmon Farmers Feast was a resounding success. Over 200 guests enjoyed a delicious meal, mingled with one another, and participated in a lively cake auction that added an entertaining element to the evening. The event provided a platform for:

• FFA Students and Agriculture Teachers: Attendees met the students and teachers, learning about their innovative programs and the impact they have on preparing youth for careers in agriculture.
• Farmers Market Vendors: Vendors showcased their products to a broader audience, gaining exposure and building connections with the community.

The proceeds of over $7,000, along with the funds raised from the cake auction, provided much-needed financial support to the FFA programs.
