Healthy Eating Around the World

Author: Alethea Price

Planning Unit: Boyle County CES

Major Program: Nutrition and Food Systems General

Plan of Work: Acquisition of Life Skills

Outcome: Initial Outcome

Food is a significant piece of culture. Many countries around the world offer guidance for foods and lifestyle habits to promote health. While the local or preferred foods may be different, the general food-based dietary guidance and goals to promote health around the globe are quite similar.

The Fort Harrod Area Family and Consumer Sciences Agents provided a multi-county leader lesson to thirty-nine Extension Homemakers and community members at the Boyle County Extension office on October 16, 2024. This program provided an opportunity to gain experience about cultures around the world and explore flavors of their cuisine. Homemaker members received resource materials to share the program at their November 2024 club meetings.  Participants had the opportunity to sample food and drinks from the countries of Africa, Asia, Australia, Brazil, Mexico, and Ukraine. One participant reported "I got to taste foods I would not have eaten otherwise (because borscht and kombucha always sounded gross!) and I loved it all!" Participants discussed recipes that they would share with their respective homemaker clubs.

Of those surveyed after the program, 89% felt their knowledge increased about how other countries' dietary guidance compares to those of the United States. Eighty-seven percent of the people also had increased understanding of foods and meals eaten around the world. As a result of this program, 89% said they plan to try a new international recipe or restaurant, and 83% plan to learn more about how people in their community serve foods from other cultures.

Post survey comments included:

  • Did not realize other countries eat, or try to eat, as healthy as they do.
  • Foods were all great. Loved eggrolls - have not had any better anywhere.
  • In "A" County we used to do an international dinner. Each club would pick a country, plan a meal and short program about that country.
  • This was a wonderful event. So well organized. The "cooks" are much appreciated!

One participant reported the most important thing from this program they will apply to their life was "to enjoy and share meals with family & friends. Fruits & veggies most important in diet."
