Author: Bernita Cheirs

Planning Unit: Fulton County CES

Major Program: Family and Consumer Science

Plan of Work: Enhancing Personal Development through Life Skills

Outcome: Initial Outcome

According to Youth.gov, studies how that afterschool programs can support social, emotional, cognitive, and academic development, reduce risky behaviors, promote physical health, and provide a safe and supportive environment for children and youth. Cloverbud age youth are a vulnerable age group so it was important to offer activities to allow them to explore.

For the 2024-2025 4-H program year, eighteen youth are signed up to participate in the Fulton County Cloverbud program. Using the Cloverbud activities curriculum provides activities in the seven core content area. So far, activities included using the five senses, all about pumpkins, and thankfulness. Youth are learning how to relate to others, self exploration, and agriculture.

Parents are required to sign up for a meeting to assist the 4-H agent. This gives the parent an opportunity to be a part of the parent child development and also allows the agent t teach versus babysit.

Many changes were made to allow for more involvement. First change, meetings are held at the Extension Office and it begins at 4pm instead of right afterschool. This helped eliminate bus issues and locations issues that were had in the past. Parents are required to volunteer at at least one meeting which gives assistance to the agent and less interruptions.

Students are learning to work together, try new foods, and explore their creativity by working on crafts and projects. The goal this year is to have a couple of students attend Cloverbud camp this year.
