Middle and High School Ag literacy

Author: Trever Cole

Planning Unit: Mason County CES

Major Program: Agriculture

Plan of Work: Livestock and the Environment

Outcome: Initial Outcome

With ever growing disconnect between consumers and the processes to grow the food they consume, Ag literacy has become more important than ever. To help bridge this gap I have partnered with one of the agriculture teachers at Mason County Schools to offer hands on learning to their classes. ranging from ear tagging demonstrations to using KY Kate to demonstrate how a cow is milked with accompanying insight into the dairy industry. These lessons have included a wide variety of topics centered around agriculture. For dairy students learned about the dairy process from cow to the shelf, milked KY Kate, tested dairy products and alternatives for lactose, and tasted various dairy product learning the difference from whole milk to skim milk. Students also learned different methods to help producers identify livestock, practices ear tagging and notching, learned feed ID, how meat poultry are processed and much more.

Throughout the course of the year students demonstrated an increased knowledge of agricultural practices and understanding of the agricultural supply chain bring food to the table.
