Holiday Wreathmaking Classes Continues to Expand Outreach

Author: Sharon Flynt

Planning Unit: Scott County CES

Major Program: Horticulture, Consumer and Home

Plan of Work: Implementing Life Skills for Youth and Adults in Scott County

Outcome: Initial Outcome

Describe the Issue or Situation.

As outreach to underserved audiences of Scott County continues to be a goal of the Scott County Cooperative Extension Horticulture Program, effective community engagement and outreach  takes careful planning and acknowledgement.  Each population that we  (extension) work with is unique and offers us opportunities to increase our cultural competence by  broadening our understanding of what cultural competence is and how it affects our community. The U.S. Department of Health Services describes cultural competence as "the ability of individuals and systems to respond respectfully and effectively to people of all cultures, classes, races, ethnic backgrounds, sexual orientations, and faiths or religions in a manner that recognizes, affirms, and values the worth of individuals, families, tribes, and communities, and protects and preserves the dignity of each.”

Describe Educational Program Response (and Partners, if applicable).

This year, annual  Wreathmaking classes were used  to reach underserved audiences across the county. Research shows  horticulture activities can be used to reach all audiences as plants are non-discriminating and non-threatening, and anyone can be successful utilizing this medium. The agent sought to partner with diverse organizations and agencies such as the Scott County Parks and Recreation Program, the Ed Davis Learning Center, the Boston Community Memorial Park Initiative, Mary's Safe Haven Rehabilitation Program, and the Scott County Public Library by being present at their activities and meetings, providing extension resources, along  with  tools such as the newsletter, flyers, and local newspaper.

Provide the Number and Description(s) of Participants/Target Audience.

All citizens of Scott County were targeted, along with increased effort with the groups mentioned above. Doubled the amount classes in 2024 along with differing times (morning classes, afternoon classes, evening classes and weekend) were added to reach under served , at risk audiences and youth.  Offering the classes in different locations were considered, but by nature of the largeness of the wreath making machines, and supplies needed, classes were held at the Scott County Cooperative Extension facility.

Provide a Statement of Outcomes or Program Impact.

There was an increase ein the general public attendance as well a significant increase in underserved audiences. Eleven participants who identified themselves as black on class sign sheets attended, as well as participants of Mary’s Safe Haven Transitional Housing for women recovering from substance misuse and their infants.  With a few changes  made to meet the capability level in this hands on activity, the elderly (parents who were under the care of their adult children) as well as  young children and toddlers were accommodated and welcomed to this traditionally adult program.  This made it  easier for many Moms of young children to attend, as well as participants who are caretakers for their elderly relatives, giving them all a fun and relaxing activity.

One young  mom stated that she was nervous about bringing here toddler and baby, and was prepared to leave the class if needed, but said she truly enjoyed the class and appreciated the toddler tailored wreathmaking activity that kept her toddler happy and engaged. One 92 year old, who has be quiet and reserved at first, became animated and involved in the process, once she realized that the class modifications allowed her to fully participate. Groups of teachers, and family groups of  diverse ethnicities attended as well. Many participants said they plan to make it an annual holiday outing, now that they know about the program.

Please note that the outcomes statement must use evaluation data to describe the change(s) that occurred in individuals, groups, families, businesses, or in the community because of the program/outreach.
