Wreath Program
Author: Mary Dossett
Planning Unit: McCracken County CES
Major Program: Horticulture, Consumer and Home
Plan of Work: McCracken County Horticulture Education Outreach
Outcome: Intermediate Outcome
People in the community wanted a hands-on program to learn how to use their cuttings from trees to make beautiful wreaths.
We limit the number of participants to 50 people so the horticulture assistant and I can fully prepare for the program. We cut all of the greenery for the participants and supply all of the materials needed. Such as pruners, tree picks, accessories, bows, and much more! We ended up having 45 make wreaths and lots of volunteers. We had a homemaker present with several helpers teaching people how to make bows. Everyone loved looking at all of the different accessories they can add and everyone left with a smile on their face.
We had several people sign up for next years class since they had such a great time. Many participants said they did not realize how much fun it was to use greenery to make wreaths. They said they may add more to their wreath throughout the season. This promotes people to get outside and enjoy their surroundings. They also got to learn how to identify the different types of greenery and why this greenery is used and not others. Several participants also said they made new friends with the people at their tables and they exchanged phone numbers. We will be offering this program again in 2025. We even made the local paper!
