Community Christmas 2024

Author: Mary Lawson

Planning Unit: Menifee County CES

Major Program: Family and Consumer Science

Plan of Work: Unrelated to a specified County Plan of Work

Outcome: Initial Outcome

Describe the Issue or Situation:
Many families in Menifee County face financial hardships during the holiday season, making it difficult to provide Christmas gifts for their children. The lack of resources and rising costs leave parents feeling overwhelmed, and children often miss out on the joy of receiving gifts during the holidays. This challenge highlighted the need for a community-driven solution to support less fortunate families and foster a sense of holiday cheer.

Describe the Outreach or Educational Program Response (and Partners, if applicable):
To address this issue, the Menifee Extension Office partnered with the Family Resource and Youth Services Centers (FRYSCs) to host the annual Community Christmas event. The program consisted of two sessions designed to accommodate families’ schedules, offering a welcoming environment where they could select affordable or free gifts for their children. All gifts were wrapped and provided to families, ensuring children had special surprises on Christmas morning. Local businesses, organizations, and community members contributed donations, while the Extension office offered additional resources, such as budgeting tips, nutrition education, and healthy holiday recipes.

Provide the Number and Description(s) of Participants/Target Audience:
The event served over 61 families, benefiting more than 112 children in Menifee County. Participants included parents and caregivers from low-income households who faced financial difficulties during the holidays. Children were also engaged in festive activities, such as holiday crafts and snacks, while their parents shopped. The program specifically targeted families in need, identified in partnership with FRYSCs and local community organizations.

Provide a Statement of Outcomes or Program Impact:
Evaluation data from participant feedback indicated that 95% of parents felt the event reduced their financial stress during the holiday season, and 85% expressed gratitude for the wrapped gifts, which made their children’s Christmas mornings more special. Additionally, 75% of attendees reported increased awareness of local Extension programs and resources, such as financial management and nutrition education. The program strengthened community connections and fostered a spirit of hope and generosity, ensuring that families in need experienced a joyful holiday season.
