Brain Health plays a vital role in our daily lives and overall health. According to the Alzheimer’s Association, Alzheimer’s disease is a growing public health crisis in Kentucky. According to the Alzheimer’s Association 11.2% of people aged 45 and older have subjective cognitive decline in Kentucky.
The University of Illinois Extension developed Wits Workout Curriculum based on brain health and aging research. FCS Agents across Kentucky were trained in the curriculum in February 2024. To address brain health Pike County FCS Agent conducted 8 Wits Workout Classes in 2024 with a total of 66 participants. Participants engaged in lessons to address multiple components of brain health including forgetfulness contributors, intellectual challenges, exercise, diet, sleep, stress management, socialization, and recall.
In November, 9 participants attended the Wits Workout Lesson that focused on socialization. 100% of the Participants attending the lesson on socialization reported gaining knowledge on health and wellbeing such as the importance of meaningful social connections. 100% of participants attending this lesson also reported gaining knowledge on the importance of mental activity. 100% of participants attending this lesson also reported intentions to improve healthy lifestyle behaviors such as mental activity or meaningful social connections. Wits Workout continues to be a monthly brain health class offered by Pike FCS Agent.
