Plan of Work: Developing Life Skills

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

Tot Time was a new program designed to support young children in preparing for kindergarten by enhancing their social, life, and physical skills. Recognizing the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, which limited socialization opportunities, and the barriers faced by families with fewer resources, Tot Time aimed to equip both children and parents with the tools needed for a successful transition into kindergarten. Offered in partnership with SOAR, the program included interactive activities that fostered teamwork, communication, and cooperation, helping children develop crucial social skills. Physical activities were incorporated to promote motor skills, coordination, and overall health, while life skills, such as dressing independently and drinking from an open cup, empowered children to handle everyday tasks with confidence.

Parents were also actively involved, participating in 30-minute instructional sessions that taught them how to reinforce these skills at home, building a strong partnership between home and the early learning environment. The program served 10 children and their guardians, creating an engaging and supportive space for families to prepare for kindergarten. By addressing both academic and social readiness, Tot Time ensured that participants were confident, competent, and well-prepared to face the challenges of kindergarten, promoting a positive and successful start to their educational journey.

This new innovative program will be offered every summer at the Muhlenberg Extension Office.
