The Christian County Extension Office began partnering with the University of Kentucky College of Nursing and Pennyrile Area Development District to increase community participation in radon testing and saw a 380% increase for the county over a three-month period. This success demonstrates the critical role of local partnerships in raising awareness and addressing public health concerns related to radon exposure.
Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas and the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States. Christian County's geology and soil composition place its residents at higher risk, so the need for radon testing is urgent. Many homeowners remain unaware of radon’s presence, as it is odorless, tasteless, and invisible. Testing is the only way to detect radon levels, and timely action, such as installing mitigation systems, can significantly reduce the risk of lung cancer.
The Christian County Extension Office became the first in the state to host radon testing units for distribution to local residents. By providing free radon test kits and conducting educational outreach, the office engaged the community and removed barriers to testing. Communication efforts included radio interviews, social media campaigns, and newsletter outreach.
Over the next five years, the Kentucky Radon Program plans to expand this initiative to other county extension offices statewide. In Christian County, the Hopkinsville Community College will also begin a certification program to train students to mitigate homes with high radon levels.
