Every year, one of my biggest events is our McLean County Youth Ag & Safety Day. We bring in all the 4th grade students from each elementary school from across the county to our park. We have several community members who are involved in agriculture to come and speak with the children at each booth. While most of our vendors are directly related to agriculture, we also invite local first responders to speak about the dangers involved with being around farm equipment that might be easily accessible for children living in a rural area such as ours.
We break the children into groups of 15-20 and let them each have a rotation of 30 minutes at each station. Allowing the children to interact with community leaders while learning about the Ag industry, safety, and also getting to tour an ambulance, learn how to use & practice using a firetruck hose, and see a live demonstration from KU about powerlines and safety regarding electricity.
This years event had over 100 children and even more vendors and volunteers than last year. The children always love this day and I hope for it to continue and grow in future years.
