Extension Minute

Author: Carol Hinton

Planning Unit: Breckinridge County CES

Major Program: Farm Management, Economics and Policy

Plan of Work: Strengthening leaders to expand community leadership and economic development

Outcome: Initial Outcome

Describe the Issue or Situation.

Breckinridge County is a vast county in area, occupations and lifestyles.  We reach clients in numerous avenues, but improvements can always be made.  This became apparent when recruiting individuals for Annie’s Project.  The program brought in families that were not on our mailing lists, approximately 25% of the participants had not visited the Extension Service.

Describe the Outreach or Educational Program Response (and Partners, if applicable).

A more concerted effort is being made to post to all our Extension Facebook accounts, but this still does not reach individuals that could be potential clients of the Cooperative Extension Service.

Provide the Number and Description(s) of Participants/Target Audience.

We have been asked by the County Extension Council to participate in advertising along with UK ballgames or during a morning show on the local radio station.

With a little bit of encouragement I started a program called ‘The Extension Minute’.  This program was designed by the local radio station and paid for by the Extension District Board through marketing money.

As the title suggests, it is for 1 minute, it is pre-recorded and it airs Monday through Friday.

Provide a Statement of Outcomes or Program Impact. Please note that the outcomes statement must use evaluation data to describe the change(s) that occurred in individuals, groups, families, businesses, or in the community because of the program/outreach.

After Annie’s Project program I started a series of 1 minute info spots on ‘How to Write a Will’.  The Information was Extension based, and timely information on how to start the process.  I referred the listeners to the Extension Service for more information.   Over the course of 2 months, we had 15 non-Extension clients to call in and request information on ‘How to Write a Will’.   Numerous other topics are brought to ‘The Extension Minute’ but this one is a topic that no one realizes that the Extension Service can provide information to them.
