Plan of Work: Increase Knowledge of Agriculture and Natural Resources through Education and Experience
Outcome: Long-Term Outcome
In an effort to teach the Madison County 4-H Poultry Club more about poultry, the leaders decided to enter them in the Avian Bowl at the State Fair. Studying and practicing for such an event can become extremely time consuming. This takes trust from the leaders as well as the peers who are involved.
Fortunately, we are equipped with an incredible knowledgeable leader who founded this club many years ago. Historically, the leader heads up the practices and quizzes the members but unfortunately she became ill this past year. The CES did not want to disappointment the members so the CES printed out all the study guides, entered the team, and lead a couple of the practices.
The CES took a Junior team to the State Fair. For all the members participating it was their first time entering in the Avian Bowl. They were nervous for the first couple of rounds! Due to nerves and still trying to figure out the system, our team lost their very first match in a double elimination contest. Then the CES witnessed a shift in the attitudes and watched the Madison County 4-H Avian Bowl Junior Team do the unthinkable. After their loss, one of our members became the vocal leader and instilled confidence back into the group. The team went on to win seven straight matches to win the 2018 State Fair 4-H Junior Avian Bowl!!!
Due to the success of last year’s participants, the CES was able to recruit more members to participate. This coming year we will have a full Junior and Senior level team competing in the Avian Bowl.
The CES empowers the club members to help lead the Poultry Pal 4-H Club. This club keeps on growing and growing despite some of the agricultural interest in the club declining. The members love helping out the community in education setting up at Tractor Supply and even heading up a class for the 4-H Farm Field Day to educate others about poultry. The CES is extremely proud of the leadership not only coming from our adult leader but also the kids that are involved.
