Planning Unit: Morgan County CES

Major Program: Family and Consumer Science

Plan of Work: 7. Community and 4-H Leadership Development

Outcome: Initial Outcome

This year, a group of nine 4-H youths embarked on a creative journey, participating in a sewing group for the very first time.  Each of these 4-Hers were on beginning level. Guided by seven talented and dedicated volunteers from the community, the program spanned five months and then highlighted a summer sewing day camp.

From the outset, the youth displayed remarkable dedication, even investing in their own sewing machines to continue their newfound passion. Their commitment was evident as they eagerly signed up for the new program year, with goals to enter at the county and state fair.

The bond between the youth and their mentors has been nothing short of inspiring. Watching these relationships blossom has been a testament to the power of community and shared interests. The mentors not only imparted technical skills but also instilled confidence and a sense of accomplishment in the young participants.

Throughout the program, the youth worked on a variety of projects that showcased their growing skills and creativity. They started with simple items like pillowcases and tote bags, which helped them master basic sewing techniques. As their confidence grew, they moved on to more complex projects such as aprons, and quilt blocks. Even some of the participants participated in the Quilts of Valor to make quilts for veterans.

As the program concluded, the youth showcased their creations, each piece a symbol of their hard work and the strong connections they had formed.  All nine of the original sewing group have returned.  The success of this sewing group is a true example of how community support and mentorship can empower the next generation, fostering both personal growth and community spirit.
