Tri-County Beef Quality and Care Assurance Chute Side Training

Planning Unit: Washington County CES

Major Program: Beef

Plan of Work: Improving Agricultural Systems In Washington County

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

According to the latest Agriculture Census (2017), Washington County has over 43,000 cows and calves. This makes hosting a yearly Beef Quality and Care Assurance training necessary for our area. Normally, ANR agents host trainings at the office, play the videos created by University of Kentucky beef specialists and then administer the required tests for each module. To offer a more interactive and new experience for producers the Marion, Nelson, and Washington County ANR agents teamed up to host a beef quality and care assurance chute side training after a successful Tri-County Master Cattlemen partnership. During this training, participants were able to receive hands-on training in BQCA provided by the Kentucky Beef Network. They were then given the BQCA test to complete their certification. The goal of this program was to provide BQCA certification but to accompany that with educational components that qualify for cost-share education. That is why we also had University of Kentucky specialists Dr. Darrh Bullock and Katie Vanvalin present on genetic selection and body condition scoring. Several sponsors also set up booths to talk with producers during downtime. Sponsors included Ag Credit, Burkmann Feeds, Kentucky Beef Network, and University of Kentucky Cooperative Extension. There were 57 participants who left the program with a completed BQCA certification.
