Camp 2024

Author: Allison Croslin

Planning Unit: Graves County CES

Major Program: Camping

Plan of Work: Unrelated to a specified County Plan of Work

Outcome: Initial Outcome

Describe the Issue or Situation.

On May 26, 2024, West Kentucky 4-H Camp was hit by strong storms that caused power to be out for several days and structures to be damaged. This prohibited the Calloway, Carlisle, Christian, Hickman, and Graves camping group to attend camp in May. 4-H Camp is one of the biggest programs that happens in Kentucky 4-H, and many 4-H'ers look forward to it every year.

Describe the Outreach or Educational Program Response (and Partners, if applicable).

All agents in the Calloway, Carlisle, Christian, Hickman, and Graves camping group along with multiple extension directors and coordinators worked hard to reschedule and replan a camp date. This consisted of a shorter camp week, but we were still able to work it out with extension and camp staff. The camp group planned a three and a half day camping week in between two other groups in July. In May, Graves County partnered with Calloway County to host a one day event to make up for rescheduled camp.

Provide the Number and Description(s) of Participants/Target Audience.

Originally, there were 105 people, 90 youth and 15 counselors, ready to go to 4-H Camp with Graves County in May. When camp changed to July, 67 people attended camp. There were 9 counselors and 58 youth in total. There were 25 male youth, 4 male counselors, 29 female youth, and 5 female counselors.

Provide a Statement of Outcomes or Program Impact. Please note that the outcomes statement must use evaluation data to describe the change(s) that occurred in individuals, groups, families, businesses, or in the community because of the program/outreach.

There was many youth who went to camp for the first time this past July, and it was a great way to introduce them to camp since there was a smaller group. Many youth learned new skills such as outdoor cooking, fishing, kayaking, and many more. Throughout the week many youth talked about how much they were learning and how fun 4-H camp was. There were 19 campers who were first time campers this year, and 6 out of the 9 counselors were first time counselors. 100% of the counselors have either started volunteered in different 4-H clubs or are ready to be a counselor at camp next year! 11 out of the 58 youth have joined other 4-H programs since joining camp!
