Planning Unit: Fleming County CES

Major Program: Nutrition and Food Systems General

Plan of Work: Nutrition/Health/Wellness

Outcome: Initial Outcome

Situation: In Kentucky, only 25% of children meet the recommended 60 minutes of daily physical activity, with 1 in 5 classified as obese. Many children in Fleming County lack access to regular exercise and healthy food options, highlighting the need for engaging educational programs that promote physical activity and nutrition.

Program Response: During Ag Week, the Family and Consumer Sciences Agent visited second graders from Hillsboro, Flemingsburg, and Ewing Elementary Schools to introduce a smoothie bike. This pedal-powered blender encouraged students to exercise while learning about healthy eating. For many students, this was their first time riding a bike and trying a smoothie.

Participants: The program reached 167 second-grade students from low-income families, many of whom had limited access to bikes or nutritious snacks.

Outcomes: Post-program evaluations showed that 30% of students tried a new fruit or vegetable, and 85% said they would ask their parents to make smoothies at home. 30% of the participants had their first experience riding a bike, and 30% of the participants tried a smoothie for the first time. 30% of parents shared that their children requested healthier snacks at home, showing a positive impact on students' health habits.
