Planning Unit: Bullitt County CES

Major Program: Agriculture

Plan of Work: Natural Resources and the Environment

Outcome: Initial Outcome

Many students and adults don't know where their food comes from. Bullitt Lick Middle School, 4-H and the middle school agriculture educator piloted the Sow and Grass Class curriculum. During the curriculum, one of the lessons was break down global versus local foods. Students were engaged with the content because they know this affects them. Students put together fresh food boxes for their social action project. Students worked to address the problem of food insecurity in the community. Many low income families lack access to fresh and healthy local produce so students decided to make local food boxes. They purchased a wide variety of products from local farmers. They put food items, recipe notes and cooking implements from the Bullitt County Extension Office and distributed them through their Family Resource Center. It was great to see the community come together. Need More Acres Farm, Kentucky Farm Bureau and the Bullitt County Extension Office helped with the project. It showed students that this project was bigger than just their classroom.
