LEAP into 2nd grade

Author: Bobbie Hancock

Planning Unit: Mercer County CES

Major Program: Nutrition and Food Systems General

Outcome: Initial Outcome

Mercer County SNAP NEP partnered with Mercer County Elementary School to do a monthly program, LEAP, with the 2nd graders. The LEAP Program teaches children about making healthier choices using MyPlate, food safety, and physical activity. Each Month the NEP would read a story, ask interactive questions, and provide a healthy snack for the children to try. The snack recipes would be sent home with the children as well as a handout for the parents to see what the children were learning. 95% of the children tried the snack each month with 90% stating they would like to have the same snack at home regularly. By the end of the school year, 87% of the children enrolled had improved their knowledge regarding food handling safety. 95% of the children improved in one or more of the above-mentioned areas. Several children would excitedly report to the NEP throughout the program that they were making better (healthier) food choices when choosing and making food for themselves. Others would ask if the NEP could come teach their parents. On several occasions, the NEP met parents in passing or out in public and they would share that their children really enjoyed NEP class and learning how to be healthier.
