Success StoryElliott County Extension Field Day

Elliott County Extension Field Day

Author: Allison Keeton

Planning Unit: Elliott County CES

Major Program: Community Engagement

Plan of Work: Accessing Nutritious Foods

Outcome: Initial Outcome

Elliott County Extension has not had a field day in a long time. So, I decided for my intern project to introduce the idea of highlighting all program areas of extension with a field day.

To advertise for this event, we put a flyer in the newspaper, called the local radio, posted flyers around town, advertised on Facebook, and handed out flyers at our other extension programs. There were booths set up to showcase some of the things Elliott Extension does and some of the great businesses we work with.  A local lavender producer from right here in Elliott County did a demo on lavender Extraction, and 4-H Agent Morgan Murphy talked about raising honey bees and did a demo on honey extraction from the hive we have here at the extension office. Two of our 4-h Livestock kids brought two sheep and a goat and answering questions about the club and their 2024 livestock projects. Elliott County Soil conservation had their rental equipment on display and had a representative there to answer questions on each machine and talk about the rental process. Farmer’s Market was open and sold fresh produce, along with local craft vendors. Other local businesses such as Hinton Mills set up to display what they have to offer as well. There was an FCS recipe to sample and the Elliott County 4-H club sold hamburgers and Hotdogs to raise money for 4-H Camp. It was a fun and educational day for the whole family!

100 participates attend the field. The audience was a variety of youth and adults from our community and others.

Participates completed a simple survey of their experience. Everyone enjoyed the day and all the survey were ranked 4 or 5 out of 5 being a great experience and left some nice comments.
