How many trees make a forest?

Forest Management is an important topic for Caldwell County landowners. Woodlands are used for timber, wildlife and recreation county wide.  21% of Caldwell County is made up of woodlands.  Extension in Caldwell County has offered many forestry programs over the years.  From ice storm recovery to woodland owner’s short course, forestry related programing makes up almost 20% of service-related calls in Caldwell County.  In years that formal forestry related educational meetings are not held, the extension agent for agriculture and natural resources schedules one-on-one consultations with many landowners looking to be better stewards of their valuable resource.  In the fall of 2023, a local certified tree farm reached out to extension for some specialized information on a tract of forest being converted to a more income-based resource.  Several land visits to gather information were conducted through the winter of 2023-2024.   The agent coordinated with UK Forestry, KY Division of Forestry, Kentucky Division of Water, Natural Resource Conservation District, and local Certified Master Loggers to facilitate a multi-year plan.   In the end seven organizations collaborated to create a detailed multi-year stewardship plan for over 350 acres of valuable timber in Caldwell County.
