Planning Unit: Caldwell County CES

Major Program: Tornado Response and Recovery

Plan of Work: Building Strong Families

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

Extension offices help their communities with a plethora of normal day-to-day issues. But occasionally a once in a lifetime event happens that tests the resolve of rural communities and places some organizations at the forefront of life changing action.  On December 10, 2021, Caldwell County was one of the counties that experienced the devastating tornado outbreak that ravaged 11 counties in Kentucky.  Caldwell Extension was on the ground with local officials providing resources, leadership, and specialized support to those farm families affected.  With the burden of recovery still on the backs of those rebuilding from 2021, Caldwell County again was confronted with yet another destructive tornado outbreak on May 26, 2024.  Over 40 farm structures were destroyed in the path.  Farm facilities in Kentucky house a wide array of livestock, equipment, and in early spring, chemicals.  As the destruction was being surveyed at daylight on May 27th, emergency officials were confronted with severely damaged farm chemical storage facilities at multiple farms. Many containers were damaged, had missing labels or were contaminated with storm debris.  Extension was tasked by emergency management to coordinate with local officials and the Kentucky Department of Agriculture to facilitate the containment and disposal of pesticides as they were encountered.  Extension continues to be a valued grass roots resource for communities, especially in times of disaster
