Planning Unit: Caldwell County CES

Major Program: Beef

Plan of Work: Develop Individuals for Volunteer and Leadership Roles

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

The Caldwell/Lyon Cattlemen's Association has been a staple of leadership and community support in the area for many years.  Cooking events, scholarships for local graduates, and educational events provide timely benefit to many local organizations.  Association leaders have discussed the need for a junior association for several years.  As the agriculture community ages the need to mentor and promote young producers to carry the torch is on everyone's mind.  The association president reached out to local youth just as a one enterprising Caldwell County High School senior was elected as the Kentucky Cattlemen’s Association Junior President.  Extension, the cattlemen’s executive committee, and local teens worked with KCA to form the Caldwell/Lyon Junior Cattlemen’s Association.  Sixteen junior cattlemen joined the first meeting. Officer elections were held, and business and educational meetings were held in conjunction with the regular cattlemen’s membership meetings to build excitement and promote the initiatives of the junior association.  Extension continues to help facilitate events and serves as advisor to both associations as to retain youth in the production of cattle and advocates of beef consumption but as future leaders of their organization.
