Plan of Work: Youth and Adults Overcome Life Situations by Acquiring Life Skills

Outcome: Long-Term Outcome

Taylor County 4-H was well represented at the 2023 Kentucky State Fair through multiple entries and events. Forty 4-H fair entries were entered in Cloverville resulting in six white ribbons, eleven red ribbons, twenty-two blue ribbons, two class champions and one division champion reserved.

New this year, we had a team to compete in the 4-H Land Judging Competition. We also had a participant in the Lawn Tractor driving competition, which we had not participated in for the last few years.

Our Horticulture Judging Teams took home ribbons from the Fair as well. The junior team placed 3rd overall and senior team placed 2nd.

In the Country Ham Project, we took home top awards for the first time since 2020. In the 2009, non-smoked category we had a youth to place 2nd overall. He earned this placing 3rd place with his ham and 3rd place with his Country Ham Speech. Two other youths also earned recognition in the contest. One with her smoked Ham, who placed second in her age division and another with his, placed 2nd in his age division as well.

Many efforts were made to achieve these accomplishments at the Fair. Over fifteen Fair Projects were held at the Taylor County Extension Office leading up to the County Fair in June. Multiple Country Ham Speech practice classes were held along group practices for the Land Judging and Horticulture Judging Teams.

Youth who participated in the State Fair learn more about their specific core curriculum interest or project area, developed a sense of belonging with their project or event and built positive relationships with their caring Extension Agents, and volunteers who helped them prepared for the fair.
