According to the Afterschool Alliance, 85,849 Kentucky children were left alone and unsupervised between the hours of 3 and 6 p.m. in 2020. This is still the case for many students in Simpson County, and these students report that they prepare meals or snacks while home alone.
The Area Extension Agent for Family and Consumer Sciences partnered with the Simpson County Extension Agent for Family and Consumer Sciences to teach the basics of Kitchen Safety to all 4th and 5th grade students in Simpson County, as part of the Lincoln Elementary School Environmental Awareness and Safety Day.
491 students participated in preparation space, oven, stovetop, microwave, and knife safety demonstrations to practice skills that they could use to safely prepare food at home. One month later, 80% of 4th grade students recalled and demonstrated what they learned while participating in a different foods program, including proper handwashing, preparation space cleanliness, and knife safety.
