4-H offers many opportunities for youth to explore and discover their sparks. High quality 4-H program settings provide youth a place to belong, matter and explore their personal spark. Hancock County 4-H partners each year with the Hancock County Middle School Youth Service Center to offer an afterschool Culinary Arts Club to the 6th-8th grade students. At the conclusion of the year, the members are rewarded with a culinary-based field trip.
The Ky Wildflour Bakery was a field trip destination more than 10 years ago. On that trip a young girl tried her hand at piping and decorating a cupcake. That day a spark ignited. A decade later, that same girl is teaching cake decorating to the current members of the 4-H Culinary Arts Club. When she was with them, she discussed the field trip to the bakery and said, “Look at me now.” She started selling her baked goods while in high school. Now is an entrepreneur with her very own bakery in our downtown area. She is one of the county’s youngest business owners.
This 4-H Club involvement led her to a career with her own business. This spark is burning brightly while she continues to work hard to build her bakery business and become a leader in our community.
