Organwise Guys for K-2

Author: Lora Gullett

Planning Unit: KSU Administration

Major Program: Accessing Nutritious Foods (general)

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

KSU SNAP-Ed Nutrition Program provided 6 session of lessons to 6 classes of Rodburn Elementary School Students in grades kindergarten, first and second using the Organwise Curriculum during their health class. The Organwise Guys are a set of engaging characters that teach children about the importance of good nutrition, physical activity and overall healthy lifestyles. The goal of the Organwise Curriculum is to help decrease the prevalence of childhood obesity and 33% of Rowan County students are either obese or overweight. Along with learning about the major organs in their bodies the students were taught basic hand washing techniques, and the Organwise Guys Club rules which are to 1. Eat Low Fat 2. Eat High Fiber 3. Drink Water and 4. Exercise.

Reinforcement of these concepts were done with age and class appropriate worksheets which the health teacher could use for grading and participation. Evaluation of the success of the program was a pre and posttest for K-2 developed by Universities of California and Michigan State Extension in 2014 which was evaluated by the WebNEERS Program (Clemson University Web-based reporting system). Summary of the evaluations showed 93% of the children in grades K-2 improved in 1 or more core area. The Organwise Guys Curriculum offers several different programs to keep the students engaged and learning about science-based nutrition and health activities. KSU SNAP-Ed plans to offer this program in the other elementary schools in the county.
