Major Program: Accessing Nutritious Foods (general)

Outcome: Long-Term Outcome

In August of  2013 the Bullitt County Extension Service,Expanded Food Nutrition Education Program Assistant and the Bullitt County Detention Center became partners to bring healthy eating to the men in the Substance Abuse Program.

One of the goals in the program is to promote food safety. To ensure that the men understand the importance of washing hands we use the Germ Glo program. We will use several of the men in the program and have them wash their hands with water, soap and water and one that doesn't wash his hands at all. The men were shocked on how much of the Germ Glo was left on the hands of the men who did wash their hands.

One of the men told me he thought he had been washing his hands the right way all these years and that he would make an effort to do better.

As of July 2018 we have graduated 26 men and they were at 100% in the food safety category. This also includes the lessons in storing, thawing foods safely, using a meat thermometer and keeping all surfaces/items clean after cutting raw meat or seafood.
