Outcome: Initial Outcome

Learning food preparation skills and the importance of good nutrition is important for good health.  The address the need of skills among youth, the Meade County Family and Consumer Sciences agent offered a three day Super Star Chef Camp for ages 9-12. Students learned a variety of skills through hands on learning focused on knife skills, basic food safety, how to read a nutrition label, how to use measuring cups and a food thermometer as well as the importance of physical activity and consumption of fruits and vegetables. Two volunteers assisted with the program which was especially important with the knife sills and use portion. Students completed a pre and post test to gain knowledge increase.  As a result of the program, 83% indicated they can not recognize food that are part of the protein group, 83% identified how germs get transferred to food.   92% indicated they know how to properly measure ingredients and 67% indicated they know how to guide food when using a knife.  This was a 59% increase from their knowledge in the beginning of the program.  Two of the participants indicated they want to become a chef as their career goal and one has since attended specialty food programs offered through the extension FCS program.
