Extension Homemakers and Veterans Outreach

Author: Vicki Wynn

Planning Unit: Marshall County CES

Major Program: Community Engagement

Plan of Work: Empowering Community Leaders

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

Marshall County Extension Homemakers have a special place in their hearts for men and women who currently serve and have served in the military. They have established connections with the local Disabled American Veterans (DAV) group and learned how they can honor and serve the large veteran population in our area.

A workshop was held at the Extension Office to make laundry detergent that will be distributed to veterans that will assist with everyday needs. Volunteers came together to learn how to make the detergent, how to best distribute to those receiving it, and also made hand-written cards to accompany each package to express appreciation for their service.

Kentucky Extension Homemaker Association (KEHA) members in Marshall County have established positive relationships and teachable moments that will impact lives for many years to come. The estimated value of the project was a savings to each recipient of $20-$30 each month. In addition, programs are being planned to assist with additional pantry items.
