Author: Jane Proctor

Planning Unit: Trimble County CES

Major Program: Food Preparation and Preservation

Plan of Work: Accessing Nutritious Foods

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

Studies indicate that individuals who engage in cooking meals at home are more inclined to consume the recommended portions of fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains necessary for a well-rounded diet. Developing culinary expertise and knowledge heightens the likelihood of opting for homemade dishes. In an effort to promote increased home cooking, the Trimble County Extension Office introduced a the Savor the Flavor five session initiative to the local community. This program concentrated on diverse cooking methodologies and methods of enhancing taste. It was designed to equip participants with the skills to craft flavorful and stimulating home-cooked meals, employing fundamental techniques that are easily integrated into everyday cooking. Despite common apprehensions and uncertainties about cooking, many express a desire to enhance their culinary abilities and experiment with new flavors. The objective of this program is to foster awareness about cooking techniques and strategies for enhancing food flavor. The workshop attracted 38 attendees, with 29 completing post-workshop surveys, all expressing intent to implement behavioral changes. Participants identified several key takeaways from the program, including learning how to peel ginger efficiently, feeling inspired to explore stir-fry dishes, incorporating more vegetables into their diets, and feeling motivated to experiment with new ingredients and cooking methods.
