Planning Unit: Greenup County CES

Major Program: Communications

Plan of Work: Enhancing Life Skills and Building Consumer Awareness

Outcome: Initial Outcome

A holiday craft workshop was held at the Greenup County Extension Office to encourage youth to expressive their creative skills in painting, sewing and giving them the opportunity to create a gift for a family member or loved one during the holiday season. 7 youth participants attended the workshop channeling their own art vision to create a one of a kind gift. For several youth at the workshop, the stuffed tree ornament was the first sewing project they had created. For one participate, this workshop has sparked her interest in sewing additional projects in the near future. This young lady asked for assistance with cutting out the pattern and threading the needle. I worked with her to explain the process from cutting the pattern, to sewing on the buttons, to stitching the two pieces of felt together and finally stuffing the ornament so it was ready to be gifted to her Grandmother. After working with the young lady, we practiced additional button techniques and how to secure the button and other attachments to a garment so she could complete additional projects to expand her skill. She told me she plans to take the simple skill she learned to help her family repair clothes, purchase additional materials to make more ornaments to gift to additional family members and possibly attend classes to expand her sewing knowledge so she can create her own clothing.
