Grandparents Raising Grandchildren

Author: Rebecca Parrent

Planning Unit: Crittenden County CES

Major Program: Accessing Nutritious Foods (general)

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

Several grandparents in Crittenden Co. are having to raise their grandchildren or their nieces and nephews.  Most of these grandparents are on a fixed income and have a hard time just feeding themselves. They simply don’t have the resources to purchase healthy food for the family because they usual run out of food before the end of the month.  The Crittenden County Extension Service working through the Expanded Food Nutrition Education Program Assistant teaches My Plate, Meal Planning and Food Budgeting with couponing and other classes to help these families make the most of their resources.

One grandmother had been coming to all the classes that the Assistant offered.  She wanted to learn how to eat healthier herself and make sure that her grandchildren had the nutritious food they needed.  After the last class was over she raised her hand and very proudly told the assistant and the rest of the class that she had learned to stretch her resources.  She was eating healthier, had started walking and had lost five pounds.
