Beef: It's What's for Dinner

Author: Benjamin Rudy

Planning Unit: Fulton County CES

Major Program: Beef

Plan of Work: Increasing Agricultural Stability through Cropping Systems, Marketing, and Pest Management

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

By the year 2050 Agriculture producers will have to increase food production by 70 %.  On the average 76 % of all the land in the four river counties is in crop production.  Three of the four counties Ballard, Carlisle, and Fulton County have over 33 million in average crop sales.  Hickman County sells over 56 million in crop sales. Even with those numbers we still have an average of 45 million of animal products sold in the four counties.  In all four counties there is an average of 24.75% female farm operators. Our program this year for the Four River Women In Ag was to concentrate on Beef: It’s what’s for Dinner.  Greg Rentfrow presented improved ways of utilizing beef cuts to maximize sales. He incorporated a power point and several hands on activities with beef cuts.  Tom Miller provided a look at how spraying Dicamba herbicide has caused issues in the four river county area.  FSA mentioned agency updates, while Amy Cates from Cates Farm and Produce, closed out the meeting with how to get started with farmers markets and locally grown produce.  75% of those surveyed were encouraged and thought the programs would have an impact on their farm operation.  80% mentioned that spraying Dicamba was a concern to the Women in Ag also.  90 % of those attending felt topics were on target and of interest to the family farm. With combined sales of over 99 million in three of the counties and 56 million in sales from Hickman County agriculture has a big impact on farms in the Four River Counties.
