Plan of Work: Science Education
Outcome: Long-Term Outcome
Few if not many families go without electric during the winter months, some year-round. Menifee County Family and Consumer Science agent and SNAP NEP senior assistant set out to have a one-day outdoor cooking program that teaches 5th grade youth how to safely cook outside using an open fire pit, a cast iron Dutch oven, and the ingredients of the meal we cooked together. Partnering with 4-H and Menifee Central elementary school, this cooking outdoor program allowed for 100% of attending 5th grade youth to learn about fire safety, food handling safety, heat convection, and proper cooking techniques for using a cast iron dutchoven outside. Youth can take these skills and apply them with adult supervision and in their future cooking.
