Access to food can be an area of concern in Carlisle County, especially for those with limited resources. While assistance programs are available, even those programs are limited due to the small size and population of the county. Small community pantry boxes have begun popping up in small communities to combat the deficit in the battle against hunger.
During monthly educational programs FCS Extension, Carlisle County Drug Court participants cover a variety of topics geared towards contributing to overall health. While discussing community service opportunities, these participants created a plan to facilitate a canned food drive to benefit the local community pantry boxes. The group was able to plan, organize and facilitate a food/supply drive that resulted in enough non-perishable items to completely stock the cabinets at both the Bardwell and Arlington locations of Community Pantry Boxes. Having found an opportunity to fill a community need, the group has ongoing plans to continue their food collection efforts through multiple donation events.
