Planning Unit: Campbell County CES

Major Program: Community Vitality and Leadership – 4-H Youth Development

Plan of Work: 4-H Youth Development - Youth Agriculture Education

Outcome: Long-Term Outcome

The Alexandria Fair & Horse Show is a culminating event of yearly 4-H project work for Campbell County youth.  Project work is defined by including the following:  “(a) planned work in an area of interest to the 4-H member, (b) guided by a 4-H adult volunteer who is the project leader, (c) aimed at planned objectives that can be attained and measured, (d) summarized by some form of record keeping, and (e) a minimum of six hours of project instruction” (National 4-H Council, 2013).

4-H Project work promotes positive youth development because it sparks interest in different project areas, fosters a sense of belonging when working in project groups and or in a club setting, helps youth develop relationships with fellow project members and/or club members and promotes engagement by challenging and encouraging youth to pursue their own learning and growth.

The 4-H events at the fair demonstrate a 4-Hers’ level of mastery in project work.  By exhibiting their projects, members can gain a sense of accomplishment and pride, see how their work compares to others and learn to set goals for what they want to accomplish the next year to make the best better.

In 2023 the Alexandria Fair and Horse Show was held August 29 thru September 4.  Seventy three (73) 4-H members participated this year.  These members exhibited in over 26 project areas and had a total of 908 class entries.   278 of these entries were 4-H project books.  By completing these books members had a chance to reflect on what was done and accomplished. They also developed written communication skills.  As a result of these efforts, the youth received over $2844.00 in prize money and over $1975.00 in ribbons, banners and trophies.

Furthermore, twenty two (22) youth participated in the 4-H Livestock Auction at the fair.  This year’s auction generated over $55,894.25.  These dollars came from over 100 individuals and businesses who wanted to support the youth and the 4-H Program.
