4-H Shooting Sports is one of the biggest youth development programs in Kentucky 4-H. In February 2023, the 4-H Shooting Sports program in Daviess County held an info session for anyone interested in learning how to shoot rifle, bb, .22, and/or shotgun. 60 youth and adults attended this meeting to learn and fill out paperwork for the upcoming season. Both the Marksmen Club (rifle, bb, .22) and Crushers (shotgun/trap) Club saw a huge increase in participation at their practices. When it came time to register for possible participants for the 2023 State Shooting Sports Competition, 22 youth were registered for the Marksmen Club and 29 youth were registered for the Crushers Club. In 2022, only 14 youth (combined for both clubs) were registered as possible participants for the 2022 State Shooting Sports Competition. Possible participants are youth who have met the 6 practice minimum required in Daviess County to participate at the State Shoot. This year, 4 youth registered to shoot air rifle, bb, and .22 target rifle and 10 youth registered for shotgun/trap, which gave us one 9-12 year old team and one 15-18 year old team for trap. Silas Smoak placed in Air Rifle Target, 9-11 Age Division. Russell Westerfield placed 3rd in Air Rifle Target (9-11 Age Division). Gavin Edgell placed 3rd in Air Rifle Target (12-14 Age Division). Lillian Connor placed 1st in .22 Rifle Target (15-18 Age Division), 2nd in Air Rifle Target (15-18 Age Division), and 2nd in Air Rifle Sport (15-18 Age Division). Plans are already in the works to add certified coaches this spring along with another information session.
