Gray Street Farmers Market

Author: Carolina Robles

Planning Unit: Jefferson County CES

Major Program: Nutrition and Food Systems General

Plan of Work: Accessing healthy foods & improving local food systems

Outcome: Long-Term Outcome

The problem: There are multiple problems we tried to target for this program. Farmers in Louisville are having a difficult time reaching different audiences. People eat the same vegetables and fruit because they are not exposed to different options. The goal of this program was to increase access to fresh, locally grown food in downtown Louisville where food access is scarce. Another issue we tried to tackle was getting seniors to use senior vouchers to be used at the farmers market so that they can also access healthier food options at low cost.

The educational program response: The response was meant to get people to try different foods from different cultures that are affordable, healthy, and made with fresh produce. We wanted to focus on Long term outcomes in which individuals would find themselves using these recipes and sharing it with others. We also wanted to focus on getting seniors information on where they can get vouchers and how they can use them at the farmers market, not just gray street but other markets in Louisville as well.

The participants/target audience: Target audience was people in downtown Louisville, seniors, and international farmers.

Other partners (if applicable): Nutrition Education Department and Common Earth Gardens,

Program impact or participant response: The impact of the program was significant. This program went on for months starting in July and ending in October. We got many individuals to try different fruits and vegetables that they had not tried before from different countries and through our samples they were able to taste different meals with those fruits and vegetables. Afterwards they would go and buy the ingredients to make the sampled food from our farmers. We were also able to give out a lot of information that the University of Kentucky provides on Nutrition, Healthy Eating, Farmers Market, Cooking through the calendar, as well as many incentive items.
