Trail Blazers 4-H Club Presents: Healthy Hearts Healthy Minds Community Event

Author: Anna Denny

Planning Unit: Breckinridge County CES

Major Program: Health

Plan of Work: Improving community wellness through nutrition, physical activity and safety

Outcome: Initial Outcome

The problem

Hardin Park is right in the heart of Hardinsburg, settled next to the Breckinridge County Fairgrounds. Not many families know about this park, even though it's right in their own backyards. Families with children also express that they would like more opportunities for their children to become physically active outdoors. The Trail Blazers 4-H Club  recognized this need, and took action.

The educational program response

The Breckinridge County 4-H Home School Club, renamed by their members as the Trail Blazers 4-H Club, planned and implemented a community event where families could come out, play fun games, and engage in physical activity at the Healthy Hearts Healthy Minds Community Event. They hosted a Walk-A-Thon, bicycle/scooter parade, sack race, hula-hoop contest, and ended the day with a picnic.

The participants/target audience

Families of all ages were welcome. There were youth participants from Cloverbud age all the way to teenage.

Other partners (if applicable)

The Breckinridge County Library joined the event, setting up a booth with books to give to the youth who attended.

Program impact or participant response.

Families were not only able to engage in family-friendly physical activity and enjoy the outdoors, but they also learned about the 4-H program in Breckinridge County, and discovered the hidden gem, Hardin Park, where they plan to return for their children to play safely outdoors.
