Planning Unit: Edmonson County CES

Major Program: Camping

Plan of Work: 4-H Youth Development

Outcome: Initial Outcome

4-H Camp gives youth the opportunity to spend time meeting new people and learning life skills by participating in activities that focus on physical activity, teamwork, and personal development.

Edmonson County youth and volunteers were excited to attend summer 4-H Camp again after a record breaking year last year. An understaffed office at Edmonson County started advertising early and was completely taken aback with how quickly spots filled up with kids eager to go to camp, even the week of July 4th.

With camp costing $275 per camper, a combination of community donations, Ag. Tag Funds, and the county District Board agreeing to help cover part of the programming cost for campers, meant we were able to offer a reduced cost, only $100, per camper. This benefited many families who are still struggling financially due to a variety of factors, and a high percentage of the county population living below the poverty level.

This year, Edmonson County set a record for the number of campers and total individuals taken to camp for the second year in a row. 57 campers, six 15-17 year old's, five adult volunteers, one University of Kentucky Agent, and, new this year, one KSU 4-H Agent housed in the Edmonson County office, attended, for a total number of 70 participants. 11 campers where first timers and 2 adult volunteers were former campers, and all four teen leaders were former campers. True to last years percentage of campers saying that they would return (95%) all but three that attended the year before came back this year, and three came back after not going last year.

When asked, all of the campers said they planned to return next year. Everyone involved were thrilled with the overwhelming success of 4-H Camp again in 2023.
