Planning Unit: Adair County CES

Major Program: Financial Education - General

Plan of Work: Strengthening Family & Consumer Sciences

Outcome: Initial Outcome

The problem of scams and fraud has been a growing concern in our local community, with many vulnerable individuals falling victim to these deceitful schemes. These scammers prey on people's financial insecurities and trust, causing significant emotional and financial damage. To combat this issue, an educational program was created to educate the public on how to identify and prevent scams. The program consisted of a scams prevention workshop that covered a range of topics, including common scams, how to avoid them, and what to do if you fall victim to one. The primary target audience for this workshop was senior citizens, who are unfortunately often targeted by scammers. However, the workshop was open to everyone in the community. Several community partners, including local law enforcement and government agencies, were involved in the development and implementation of this program. The impact of the workshop was significant. After attending the workshop, 90% of participants reported feeling more aware of potential scams and confident in their ability to identify them. Many participants shared stories of how they had previously fallen victim to scams but now felt better equipped to avoid them in the future. Overall, the success of this program demonstrates the importance of education and awareness in preventing scams. By equipping vulnerable individuals with the knowledge and tools they need to protect themselves, we can make a real difference in the fight against fraud and ensure that our community remains safe and secure.
